first_imgFolks….I have been dreaming about this moment for years……— Mike Commodore (@commie22) November 20, 2019Hey Mike Babcock….you are a total failure in Toronto….let that sink in you arrogant prick.— Mike Commodore (@commie22) November 20, 2019Commodore later released a t-shirt design on Instagram in celebration of Babcock’s firing. Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas and president Brendan Shanahan finally made their move and fired head coach Mike Babcock after the team’s losing streak extended to six games. The news disseminated through Twitter quickly — and analysts, reporters and more around the league offered their initial thoughts on the franchise-altering news as it sank in that Babcock would be replaced by the franchise’s AHL head coach, Sheldon Keefe. Here is a look at how people responded to the news on Twitter:Bob McKenzie, TSNIt is being billed as an organizational decision. Something that Dubas believed was necessary but fully supported by Shanahan and the Maple Leaf hierarchy. They felt the “message” was not getting through and a new voice is required. Shanahan and Dubas will be speaking to media.— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) November 20, 2019Devin Heroux, CBC reporterOh.It was exactly one year ago today the St. Louis Blues fired their head coach Mike Yeo after a disappointing start.Craig Berube took over and they went on to win the Stanley Cup.— Devin Heroux (@Devin_Heroux) November 20, 2019Mike Commodore, former NHL playerCommodore played 11 seasons in the NHL and developed a high-profile feud with Babcock along the way. He claimed that Babcock “screwed [him] over” while both were working in the Anaheim Ducks organization in 2002 and intentionally made him look bad so he could play a preferred player instead. Commodore signed with the Detroit Red Wings before the 2011-12 season, despite reservations about playing for Babcock again, and only played 17 games before being traded away. That season was his last in the NHL. He stated that Toronto would be better off with Mark Hunter, who served as an assistant GM alongside Dubas and left the organization after Lamoriello’s ouster .Imagine the @MapleLeafs picked an actual ‘hockey’ gm when they had the chance. They’d be a contender right now with Mark Hunter— Brandon Prust (@BrandonPrust8) November 20, 2019Adam Herman, SB NationWhere do I go to bet on Babcock taking the Seattle job?— Adam Herman (@AdamZHerman) November 20, 2019last_img read more
