India lost to Ireland 1-0 in their second Pool B encounter of the Women’s Hockey World Cup 2018 at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in London, England on Thursday. Irish win put India’s World Cup hopes in jeopardy but India only have themselves to blame for this loss.India’s 1-1 draw against the higher-ranked England was mighty and they put up a solid show there but against 16th ranked Ireland, India (ranked 10th in the world) just failed to hit the mark. They had their chances, enough penalty corners but they failed to make it count. On the other hand, Ireland were organised, sharp and made precise inroads to trouble India. They had scored off a penalty corner in their previous game against USA and they did the same against India.Off their first penalty corner, Ireland got a brilliant goal in just the 12th minute of the match. Anna O’Flanagan got her stick to a fabulous pass from Dule and it went straight into top right corner, completely out of India keeper Savita’s reach.MATCH HIGHLIGHTSWith the win, Ireland became the first nation to book their quarter-final spot in the World Cup this year and they still have a game against England in hand.FT: Ireland beat India 1-0 and book their place in the World Cup Quarter Final!!!!! #hwc2018 pic.twitter.com/WXmEU2qhC3Irish Hockey (@irishhockey) July 26, 2018This is Ireland’s first World Cup in 16 years and they looked like they wanted to make this one special.advertisementWith the loss for India, India remained third in their pool with one point from two game and there are now two scenarios in which they can qualify.
