NEW YORK, N.Y. – Kate Spade, a fashion designer known for her sleek handbags, was found hanged in the bedroom of her Park Avenue apartment Tuesday in an apparent suicide, police said. She was 55.Spade’s body was found by a housekeeper not long after 10 a.m., police said at an afternoon news conference. Her husband and business partner Andy Spade was in the apartment at the time. The police department’s chief of detectives, Dermot Shea, said that while investigators were still in the early stages of their inquiry, evidence including the state of the apartment and the presence of a note pointed to “a tragic suicide.”It’s not clear how long Spade had been dead. The medical examiner will perform an autopsy. The couple’s 13-year-old daughter was at school. Shea wouldn’t discuss what was in the note, but law enforcement officials told The Associated Press that, among other things, it contained a message to the teenage girl telling her it was not her fault. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.“We are all devastated by today’s tragedy,” her family said in a statement through a spokesman. “We loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly. We would ask that our privacy be respected as we grieve during this very difficult time.”A crime scene truck was parked outside their building on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, and barriers had been set up to keep back reporters and gawkers who were arriving to the building. The company she founded and later sold, Kate Spade New York, now has over 140 retail shops and outlet stores across the U.S. and more than 175 shops internationally.Julia Curry, a spokeswoman for the company, said that “Kate will be dearly missed” and “our thoughts are with Andy and the entire Spade family at this time.”Neva Hall, executive Vice-President at Neiman Marcus Stores, said the news was devastating.“Her creative light and bright mind will be greatly missed,” Hall wrote in a statement.Kate Spade was born Katherine Brosnahan and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. She was working as an accessories editor at Mademoiselle magazine when she launched her company with husband Andy in their New York apartment in 1993. She started the company based on six shapes of bags that she thought every working woman needed. It created a smash.“I grew up in the Midwest, where you have to have it (a fashion item) because you like it, not because you’re supposed to have it,” she told the AP in 2004. “For our customers, fashion is in the right place in their life. It’s an adornment, not an obsession.”From the original boxy handbags, she expanded into shoes, luggage and other accessories, as well as a home line, stationery, and three books. Spade won multiple awards from the Council of Fashion Designers of America and was named a “giant of design” by House Beautiful magazine.“As an accessory, a great bag that takes the outfit somewhere else is interesting,” she told the AP in a 2000 interview. She walked away from the company in 2007, a year after it was acquired from the Neiman Marcus Group for $125 million by the company then known as Liz Claiborne Inc.Coach, now known as Tapestry, bought the Kate Spade brand last year for $2.4 billion, seeking to broaden its appeal.Meanwhile, Spade and her husband — brother of comedian David Spade — started a new handbag company a few years ago, Frances Valentine. And she changed her name to Katherine Noel Frances Valentine Brosnahan Spade.“I will never forget the first Kate Spade bag I got for Christmas in college,” Jenna Bush Hager tweeted. “She was a trailblazer. Her life and death are a reminder that pain doesn’t discriminate. Sending love to her family.”

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram Wednesday took a swipe at the Modi government, charging that in this regime conviction comes first and investigation later and a person is guilty until proven innocent. He said the law secretary should “teach” the Prime Minister some basic lessons in law as the Supreme Court has said that bail is the rule and jail the exception. Cleveland Cavalier’s guard Matthew Dellavedova (9) forces his way to the basket during a game against the Philadelphia 76ers Oct. 21 at the Schottenstein Center. The Cavaliers won, 104-93.Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editorA disappointing 2012-13 season for the Cleveland Cavaliers, who finished 24-58 on the year, prompted a flurry of additions in the offseason. These additions to the roster have the potential to make them one of the most intriguing teams in the NBA this season. The Cavs went into last season hoping a talented young core of Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters and Tristan Thompson, along with long-time Cavalier Anderson Varejao would translate to more wins. After winning only 24 games and ending up with the first pick in the NBA draft for the second time in three years, it became clear the Cavs needed more of a supporting cast to help out the young talent they had gathered.Their first move, however, was not to bring in a new player, but a new coach.Byron Scott was fired after his third season with the team, and new (or old) coach Mike Brown was brought back to Cleveland after getting fired by the Los Angeles Lakers. Brown coached L.A. to a 41-25 record in the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season, but was let go after the team started 1-4 last year. With a coach in place, it was time for general manager Chris Grant to assemble the roster. In all, eight new players were brought on board, five of which should make a heavy impact on the team. With the first overall pick, Cleveland took former-UNLV forward Anthony Bennett. Then, with the nineteenth pick, acquired from the Lakers, they selected Sergey Karasev, a forward and three-point specialist from Russia.Grant was not afraid to spend money, either, signing three of the bigger free agents available. Jarrett Jack, a point guard who last played with the Golden State Warriors, was signed to bring stability and veteran leadership to the backcourt. Earl Clark, who played with Brown in Los Angeles for the Lakers, was signed to be play small forward. Finally, the Cavs shocked many by bringing in another former player of Brown’s, the oft-injured but supremely talented center Andrew Bynum. If Bynum can make a full recovery from a plethora of knee injuries, suddenly the Cavs look like a viable threat to be one of the four or five best teams in the Eastern Conference. What will stand in their way could continue to be inexperience. Irving is already a superstar in the league at just 21 years old, and Waiters and Thompson could emerge to join Irving as the Cavs “Big Three.” But Waiters is only 21 and Thompson is 22. There’s a good chance they will need more experience before they learn how to win games. That could be the value of someone like Jack, who was brought in not only for his performance on the court, but his abilities to act as a player-coach both on the floor and in the locker room. The Cavs open their season Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Brooklyn in Cleveland.
Serbian striker Luka Jovic wants to stay at Eintracht Frankfurt, despite rumoured interest from Barcelona and Bayern MunichThe Benfica loanee is tied with Borussia Dortmund’s Paco Alcacer as the Bundesliga’s leading scorer on 10 goals this season.Frankfurt sporting director Bruno Hubner has already made it clear he intends to sign Jovic permanently this summer for a rumoured fee in the region of €10-12m.But reports in the German media have suggested that Barcelona and Bayern are interested in making their own moves for the highly-rated Jovic.Mourinho: “Lionel Messi made me a better coach” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Jose Mourinho believes the experience of going up against Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi at Real Madrid made him a greater coach.Although the 20-year-old insists his sole focus lies with Frankfurt.“We, the players, shouldn’t think about that. The management at the club will decide that. As for me, I’d like to stay with Eintracht,” Jovic told Bild.“It’s nice that such big clubs are thinking about someone like me. But I keep both feet on the ground and only think about the next game.”Frankfurt, who are fifth in the Bundesliga table, will host Bayer Leverkusen in a league match on Sunday at 18:00 (CET).

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale could help determine the future of Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino. The European champions have been tracking Pochettino for the best part of two years and are prepared to match United’s offer for the former Southampton boss. 17 Photos Bloodhound may look familiar to Borderlands fans… Jason Parker/CNET Rumors had been swirling that Respawn had a new battle royale game to showcase, and on Monday, the developer officially revealed Apex Legends during a live stream. We didn’t even have to wait: It was available for free immediately on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. After playing through several matches (with one win!), it clearly has the fundamentals in order. It has a crisp, colorful art style, great shooting mechanics and a familiar, fun battle royale experience. But the biggest difference between it and Fortnite, PUBG and other also-rans is that it gives you eight unique character classes to choose from. Other games like Realm Royale already dabble in this, but don’t have the same cachet as a developer like Respawn does, having won over fans with its Titanfall series.Playable Legends make all the differenceApex Legends keeps to the battle royale conventions in most ways — 60 players drop into a large map in squads of three, search for weapons, armor and other useful items, then battle it out with other squads as a wall of death closes in. But it really shakes things up with eight different “Legends” (character classes) to choose from, each with unique abilities that let you pick your role based on your play style. There is Bangalore, who provides cover for her team with a smoke canister gun and has a passive ability that speeds up her movement when being shot at. Like all other characters, she charges up an Overwatch-like ultimate ability: in her case, a wide-ranging airstrike. Bloodhound takes on a different role as a Technological Tracker, with abilities that let him briefly see enemies in his field of view and footprints showing where enemies have recently been. 2:42 3 Apex Legends is here: How to download the new Titanfall battle royale.Resident Evil 2 review: A joyous return to zombie-infested Raccoon City. Video Games Next is Caustic, a character that currently either requires a ton of free or paid currency to play, who has gas-spewing traps and grenades you can use to control the battlefield near you. If you know an opposing squad is in a small building, for example, you can fill the place with noxious gas to flush them out.Lifeline, the Combat Medic, can heal the squad with drones. Lifeline also has a passive ability that makes her the speediest healer and reviver of all the characters. Another healing plus: She automatically drops a shield while she revives her squad mates. There are four more classes with Gibraltar (Shielded Fortress), Mirage (Holographic Trickster), Pathfinder (Forward Scout) and Wraith (Interdimensional Skirmisher), but you’re starting to get the idea. Each of these varied classes means you can assemble a team of specialists that work well together and maybe give you an advantage on the battlefield. Though there are other royale games that include classes, it’s not a mechanic found in the most popular games in the genre like Call of Duty: Blackout, Fortnite or PUBG, setting Apex Legends apart. Jason Parker/CNET Squad is the only way to playMost battle royale games offer a number of different game types, letting you play solo, with a friend or as part of a squad. As it stands right now, you can only play Apex Legends in a three-person squad. It makes sense, since you have the ability to choose your class and create a team that works well together. But not everyone (including myself) is in love with playing with random team members. Perhaps Apex Legends will eventually suggest characters to help balance a team to have the best chance of winning. We’ll have to wait and see if other game types are introduced in the future, but it makes sense to launch the game as squads-only for now.To Respawn’s credit, one thing that makes joining random squads more bearable is Apex Legends’ ping system that allows for effective communication with teammates. When you want to signal where you think the squad should go next, you simply move your target reticle to the location and hit the ping button, sending a target everyone can see. You can also call out specific items, highlighting a gun that’s available in your location or a grenade a teammate might need that you don’t. So far, it works pretty well with random squad mates, even when it’s just a replacement for opening up the map and pinging a target location. New ways to bring back your teammatesIn games like Fortnite and PUBG, when a squad member goes down, you have a limited amount of time to bring them back, leaving you stuck out in the open while you wait for a progress bar to complete. You can do the same in Apex Legends (with some advantages if you’re playing as Lifeline), but there’s another interesting option. You can also grab your downed player’s “Banner,” then bring that to a reviving station elsewhere to bring them back into the game once you’re out of danger. Of course, this means that opposing players could keep an eye on reviving stations to kill you in the process, but you can also camp around these stations to revive teammates later when it’s less dangerous. Jason Parker/CNET Yes, there are loot cratesAs an EA-published, free-to-play title, no one’s probably surprised there are loot crates. But all I’ve seen so far are loot crates that hold cosmetic items like skins for your guns, new banners, tons of character skins and unlockable audio quips for Legends. Our sister site GameSpot talked to Apex Legends’ project lead Drew McCoy about loot crates during a preview event prior to the game’s launch. “We’ve seen from games like Battlefront II, how much paying for any kind of advantage is so bad,” McCoy said. “I actually think that Battlefront is a really good game mechanically, and they did a lot of great things and it got overshadowed by some of those choices, but it’s a really good spotlight to shine on why those kind of systems are so problematic.” With this in mind, Respawn is trying to be transparent with the system by posting the drop rates for its loot boxes both in the in-game store and on its website. You’re guaranteed at least a rare item with every crate and they won’t give you duplicates. “We just hope that you find a large enough player base that likes what we’ve built and wants to show off and decides to spend some money in the game,” he said. “But if not, free players who spend their time are just as important to us. We take that very seriously. Time and money are the two most precious things in any humans life. And in fact, they’re choosing to spend either of them with us is incredibly important to us.” Depending on your platform, you’ll also be able to get an initial batch of free cosmetic items if you follow GameSpot’s guide here. How is Apex Legends different from Fortnite and PUBG? Tags Share your voice Is all this enough to win over Fortnite and PUBG fans?Fortnite, PUBG and Call of Duty: Blackout already have huge followings and we’re still waiting for Battlefield V’s take on battle royale, so the marketplace is more than crowded. But what makes Apex Legends stand out from the pack is Respawn’s characteristically tight gunplay mixed with the inspired character classes inspired by games like Overwatch, League of Legends and DOTA 2, making it a game that’s both about survival and creating a synergistic team that can outplay the competition. It’s too early to say whether Apex Legends will gain the kind of following of other big franchises, though the early player counts have been strong. Regardless, it’s compelling to see a top-tier developer make innovative game design tweaks that change what we’ve come to expect in the battle royale genre. We’ll have to continue to play, but from my perspective, Apex Legends is off to a great start. Comments Now playing: Watch this: The 17 most anticipated video games of 2019 Fortnite
Share your voice Music Online Comment Tags Taylor Swift’s Reputation tour lives forever and ever on Netflix How Taylor Swift flipped online fandom on its head for the better Some days social media is a laugh-a-minute whirlwind punctuated by puppy gifs, travel inspo and meme exchanges with your best online friends. Some days it is hell. It’s something global superstar Taylor Swift knows all too well.In an essay on turning 30 for the latest edition of Elle magazine, Swift opens up about how she copes with the massive amount of noise directed at her through social media platforms, and specifically how she deals with negative comments and trolls. Taylor Swift 1 It’s unlikely that any regular human being gets anything like the influx of notifications or comments that celebrities deal with. But as Swift explains, minimizing this is more than just about keeping the constant pinging to a minimum.”Social media can be great, but it can also inundate your brain with images of what you aren’t, how you’re failing, or who is in a cooler locale than you at any given moment,” she said in the essay.”One thing I do to lessen this weird insecurity laser beam is to turn off comments. Yes, I keep comments off on my posts. That way, I’m showing my friends and fans updates on my life, but I’m training my brain to not need the validation of someone telling me I look.”The question of how much of our ego and self-worth is tied up in validation from social media is relatable no matter how many, or how few followers, you might have. Whether you turn off comments and notifications or delete apps altogether for a while, everyone has their own way of getting a handle on those negative feelings — Swift included. “I think it’s healthy for your self-esteem to need less internet praise to appease it, especially when three comments down you could unwittingly see someone telling you that you look like a weasel that got hit by a truck and stitched back together by a drunk taxidermist. An actual comment I received once,” she said. For Swift, a successful woman, abuse and negativity are sad and still unavoidable side effects of putting herself out there. Keeping comments turned off is one way to block out “anyone who might feel the need to tell me to ‘go die in a hole ho’ while I’m having my coffee at nine in the morning,” she said.Swift is in the top 10 most-followed people across multiple platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. But for the reasons she herself has stated, it’s rare to see her engage with people directly through any of these services. Instead she tends to hang out on Tumblr, where she follows many of her fans. She often likes and sometimes comments on or reblogs their posts. But there have been times when Swift has disappeared from the internet altogether. In her essay, she described what it feels like when it feels like the internet turns completely against you.”A few years ago, someone started an online hate campaign by calling me a snake on the internet,” she said. “The fact that so many people jumped on board with it led me to feeling lower than I’ve ever felt in my life, but I can’t tell you how hard I had to keep from laughing every time my 63-foot inflatable cobra named Karyn appeared onstage in front of 60,000 screaming fans.”Unlike the other measures suggested by Swift, this might not be a practical solution for everyone dealing with internet bullying. But the point is to take a stand and make a statement in a way that allows you to laugh rather than feel bad about yourself.”It’s the Stadium Tour equivalent of responding to a troll’s hateful Instagram comment with ‘lol,'” she said. Akshay Kumar and Prabhas’ Saaho posterCollage of photos taken from Twitter and FacebookBollywood superstar Akshay Kumar is apparently risking the fortunes of Mission Mangal at the box office, by releasing it with Prabhas’ upcoming movie Saaho on August 15, India’s Independence Day.Independence Day is one of the few occasions, which most of the filmmakers in India try to cash in on, but they make sure to avoid clashes at the box office as much as possible. However, Mission Mangal, Saaho and Batla House will pit against each other from August 15 and their clash has raised big concerns over their collection, as they eat away each other’s prospects and end up incurring losses.Among these three films, Saaho is undoubtedly the most hyped movie for some obvious reasons. Firstly, it is the next release of Prabhas after the historical success of Baahubali 2, which has generated massive hype for the film. Secondly, it is simultaneously released in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam and it will completely capture the market in south India.Prabhas has made a huge fanbase for himself in north India with his performance in Baahubali film series and his fans are eagerly waiting for the release of Saaho. Saaho features Shraddha Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Murli Sharma, Evelyn Sharma, Chunky Pandey, Mandira Bedi and Mahesh Manjrekar in its ensemble cast. Their presence has doubled the curiosity about the movie.Secondly, the makers of Saaho have adapted unique strategies to promote it and its promos have grabbed many eyeballs. The four versions of its teaser together fetched 60 million digital views in 24 hours and its Hindi version alone fetched 50 per cent of these views. These number itself gives an idea about the magnitude of craze for the Sujeeth-directed action extravaganza across the domestic market. On the other hand, unlike Akshay Kumar’s other films, Mission Mangal lacks hype, as the makers have kept everything under wraps and they are yet to release any of its promos like first look, poster, stills and teaser. This movie is lesser known to the audience than Batla House starring John Abraham.Mission Mangal will have a tough time in getting enough number of cinema halls due to its clash with Saaho and Batla House. The lack of hype and curiosity may lead to a lesser number of footfalls, as many filmgoers would prefer to watch Prabhas and John Abraham’s film. These two aspects may end up the Akshay Kumar starrer incurring huge losses to its distributors. It was recently rumoured that Akshay Kumar had decided to advance the release of Mission Mangal by a week to avoid its clash with Saaho and Batla House. But the makers slammed the reports, saying that the movie would hit the screens on the scheduled time and there is no change in its release date. They will definitely pay a huge price for their decision of not averting its clash.

Personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local people help with rescue operations in hill areas hit by landslides in Kerala.@NDRFHQ/TwitterHas Kerala Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has lost the precious connect with the people that every democratically elected ruler should have? He has, and it hardly surprises anyone that Vijayan hasn’t realised the bitter truth yet. From one laughable lapse to another, his rickety apple cart is chugging on. The Left leader, a prisoner of the time-warped Stalinist thought process, seems to be holding on to the belief that making Kerala a police state is the best route to suppress criticism. The latest example is the widely carried out witch-hunt against mediamen, activists and social media users who criticised the government’s handling of the disaster relief funds. The sloppy management of the flood disaster in 2018 had earned Vijayan and his government deeply rooted disaffection among Kerala’s general public. The state survived the disaster because a highly socially aware and committed general public raised their game even as a the government machinery squarely failed. However, what heightened the sense of betrayal of the Kerala public was the blatant misuse of the food relief funds that followed. General public, not just political opponents, vented their anger when a second flood havoc struck the state this month. However, Kerala’s new police state had an easy way to smother criticism. File cases against social media users and media outlets that criticised the government. “The cases have been registered for spreading false campaigns on the relief works and all such people would be arrested and proceeded against as per the law,” State police chief Loknath Behera said after booking 19 people. The swift police move came a day after Vijayan called whistleblowers and social media voices “anti-social elements.” Was the criticism false and motivated? Pinarayi VijayanPTIThe Vijayan government loves to believe that the money and muscle power of the Marxist Communist Party give them the mandate to steamroller critics. The government floundered on many fronts when the flood disaster struck Kerala in 2018. The clueless government was in denial when hundreds died. When fair criticism mounted, the critics were easily termed villains and hunted down by the cyber wing of the Marxist party. So, did the government misuse the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund (CMDRF)? Yes, it did, multiple times, and brazenly. But if you say that aloud in Kerala your chief minister calls you an anti-social and his police would slap charges that attract imprisonment up to three years. That’s so much for the party that preaches the virtues of freedom of expression and tolerance.”CMDRF is an official system and the money received would be used for distress relief only… The fund is used for helping the poorest among the poor. All the allegations that the fund was being used for any other purpose is wrong,” Vijayan said. He added that those who said otherwise were commiting the most “heinous crime” and should be locked up.A lot of people in Kerala believe he was lying through the teeth. A look at incidents widely reported in the media will help. When CPI-M MLA KK Ramachandran Nair died, Vijayan’s cabinet gave the family Rs 25 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund (CMDRF) in flagrant violation of norms. The disaster relief fund is not meant for paying off bank loans of party leaders. In another blatant violation of norms the CM misused the disaster relief fund again by giving Rs 25 lakh to the family of Uzhavoor Vijayan, the state chief of NCP, an ally in the ruling coalition. An equal amount was doled out to the family of a CPM worker who was killed in an accident. Again, from the chief minister’s disaster relief fund. However, the most disastrous of the indiscretions was Vijayan’s travel in a chartered helicopter to attend a party meeting using funds meant for disaster relief. The CM spent Rs 8 lakh from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) on a chopper ride to attend a CPM meeting in February 2018. When the media reported it widely the government cancelled the original order. In January 2019, the Kerala Lokayukta admitted a case against CM Vijayan and the state government over the misuse of the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund. The case before the Lokayukta was that the CM and ministers showed “favouritism” in giving hefty financial help to NCP leader late Uzhavoor Vijayan and former CPI(M) MLA K K Ramachandran Nair. The complaint also highlighted that Rs 25 lakh was allotted from the CMDRF to the family of a civil police officer who died in an accident while escorting CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. What is CMDRF?As per rules, money from CMDRF can only be used for providing relief to people affected by natural calamities. If money is allotted for medical treatment then the beneficiary should be from below the poverty line. CMDRF is not a party fund that the CM can distribute as he pleases to his henchmen. But the CM’s army of advisers failed to tell him that. And when the people said that on public channels they became anti social elements! Fattening the cronies Another disgraceful farce is the skewed priorities at the Rebuild Kerala Initiative (RKI), which was set up to coordinate flood relief efforts. Though basic relief hasn’t reached tens of thousands of victims a year after the disaster struck, the RKI has gobbled up Rs 10 crore for its own establishment costs. The most shocking breach of public trust was the Vijayan government’s decision to rent out a building owned by a party fellow traveller as office for the RKI and furnish it to the hilt. Passengers travel in a truck to a safer place as flood waters ravaged the National Highway 47 in Ernakulam district of Kochi on August 17, 2018AFP/Getty ImagesThe government is spending Rs 88.5 lakh from the RKI funds to furnish the rented property, the Times of India reported, citing an order issued by the planning and economic affairs department. The building is right next to the state secretariat. It’s not as if government buildings can’t be found in the capital city to run the RKI office from. But it’s clear that the government is hell bent on fattening its cronies in the name of flood relief. The money in the CMDRF is the sum total of the contributions, large and small, from people everywhere in the world who wanted to help the flood-hit state. This government breached the trust element underlying a disaster relief contribution. But those who questioned it, and aired concerns over the intentions of the government, were booked under Section 118 B and 120 O of the Kerala Police Act. Section 118 B of Police Act against criticsSection 118 B provides for “imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years or with fine not exceeding ten thousand rupees or with both” for the offence of ” knowingly spreads rumours or gives false alarm to mislead the police, fire brigade or any other essential service”.Section 120 O stipulates punishment of up to one year for “causing, through any means of communication, a nuisance of himself to any person by repeated or undesirable or anonymous call, letter, writing, message, e-mail or through a messenger.”These case just show the audacity and brazenness of the government. Raise your voice against incompetence, corruption and nepotism, the cyber coolies will bury you under a sleaze load first and then the police will hunt you down. It’s a pity that a communist government in Kerala is stooping so low to protect its image. Perception management, Stalinist style?(The author is Managing Editor, International Business Times, India. Smoke rising above the city of Deraa as it’s being bombarded, Syria on 26 June in this still image taken from video. Photo: ReutersSyria’s army launched an assault on the flashpoint southern city of Daraa Tuesday, state media said, after a week of deadly bombardment on the nearby countryside caused mass displacement.Government forces have set their sights on retaking the south of the country, a strategic area that borders Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The escalation against rebels in the past week is the latest in a Russian-backed campaign to retake territory lost since the start of the Syria’s war in 2011.For a week, regime forces have ramped up their bombardment of countryside areas in the southern province of Daraa, which the United Nations says has forced 45,000 people to flee. But on Tuesday, state media said the army was launching an “operation” on the provincial capital itself, known widely as the cradle of Syria’s seven-year uprising. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, said it was the first ground operation inside the city since the escalation began.“Regime forces targeted the city of Daraa with more than 15 surface-to-surface missiles, and Russian and Syrian air strikes continue,” the Observatory said.An AFP correspondent on the southern edge of Daraa city said he could see large columns of smoke along the city’s skyline and two airplanes circling above amid the steady boom of air strikes and shelling.State television reported: “Syria’s army is carrying out targeted air strikes against terrorist positions and fortifications in Daraa.”Government news agency SANA said the strikes were a prelude “before military units advance into the south-eastern quarter of the city.”Rebel groups mainly hold the southern half of the city while loyalists control the north.‘Unparalleled destruction’Syria’s army is pursuing a divide-and-conquer strategy against rebels in the south, aiming to chop up the horseshoe-shaped territory that the opposition holds.“The regime is seeking to take control of a military base south of the city, which will allow it to cut the route between Daraa city and the Jordanian border, as well as further divide the rebel areas,” said Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman, as clashes around the base continued.Overnight, regime forces had recaptured two villages in the east of Daraa province, which allowed them to cut off a rebel pocket, the monitor said.A military source cited by state media said the army had seized both Basr al-Harir and Mlehat al-Atash.Troops then arrived on the edges of the nearby town of Al-Herak, SANA said.Air strikes and barrel bombs on Tuesday caused “unparallelled destruction across the town and to its infrastructure”, 48-year-old resident Khaleel al-Hariri told AFP.Al-Herak’s hospital had already been put out of service several days ago by bombardment.Raids on Tuesday also killed a rescue worker in the town of Basr al-Harir, the White Helmets rescue service said. The UN humanitarian coordination office (OCHA) in Syria said at least 45,000 people had fled fighting in the area in recent days.Syrians fleeDisplaced families on Tuesday could be seen streaming out of rebel-held areas in trucks piled high with mattresses, furniture, and blankets. In the distance, air strikes left massive brown-grey clouds of smoke hanging above agricultural fields.Rebels hold most of Daraa and the adjacent province of Quneitra, while the government holds a majority of Sweida to the east. The army began an intense bombardment of Daraa’s eastern countryside last week, then started striking the rebel half of Daraa city.On Tuesday, regime forces expanded the offensive even further.“Russian and Syrian air strikes began hitting opposition positions in Daraa’s western countryside near the Golan Heights, for the first time in a year,” said Abdel Rahman, killing six civilians. The regime bombardment has killed 38 civilians in a week, while 29 rebels and 24 pro-government fighters have been killed so far.The United Nations had previously warned that fighting was putting 750,000 people in rebel-held areas of the south in harm’s way.More than five million people have fled abroad since the Syrian conflict erupted in 2011. Another six million are displaced inside the country.Jordan has said it could not absorb a new wave of refugees and its border with Syria would remain closed.Amman has a “duty” to protect refugees; Amnesty International said while telling the Jordanian government it “must open its border to those fleeing Syria”.Front lines had been relatively quiet for nearly a year under a “de-escalation” deal agreed by Russia, the United States and Jordan in July 2017.To avoid a bloody onslaught, Russia is leading talks with Syria, Jordan, Israel and the United States to reach a negotiated settlement.
Suspected Rohingya people sit on the ground as they arrive in Idi Rayeuk, East Aceh on 4 December 2018. Photo: AFPA boat carrying 20 men believed to be Rohingya migrants landed in Indonesia Tuesday, authorities said, the latest group of the vulnerable Myanmar minority to reach the world’s biggest Muslim-majority nation. They arrived in Aceh province on Sumatra island in a rickety wooden boat, according to a local official, who said he thought the men were the persecuted Muslim Rohingya.”We can’t communicate with them because they don’t speak Indonesian, Acehnese, or English. So we don’t know much about them,” said Iswandi, the head of Idi Rayeuk district where they arrived, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.It is not known where the group, aged between around 20 to 40, set off from. However, in recent weeks authorities in both Myanmar and Bangladesh, where around a million of the Muslim refugees are living in camps, have stopped boats of fleeing Rohingya migrants headed mainly for Malaysia. It has been rare for Rohingya migrants to attempt the sea routes south since Thai authorities clamped down on regional trafficking networks in 2015, sparking a crisis across Southeast Asia as large numbers were abandoned at sea. That year, hundreds of Rohingya came ashore in Aceh, where they were welcomed in the staunchly conservative Islamic province. But there have been concerns the desperate community might start taking to the high seas again after mainly Buddhist Myanmar launched a new military crackdown last year that forced about 700,000 members of the Muslim minority to flee to Bangladesh. In April, about 80 Rohingya in a wooden boat landed in Aceh just weeks after dozens more arrived in neighbouring Malaysia.Indonesia tends to accept asylum seekers but they are usually barred from working and often spend years in immigration centres.
A woman writes a note to leave among flowers left in tribute to victims in Christchurch on 17 March 2019, two days after a shooting incident at two mosques in the city. — Photo: AFPAs the gunman drove to the two New Zealand mosques where he carried out his mass killings, a Serb nationalist song was heard playing in the background of the haunting video he broadcast live on Facebook. The mass shooter’s weapons also bore the names of several historical Serb nationalist figures, revealing an unexpected interest in Balkan conflicts that stirred bad blood in a region fractured by war.Hours after 50 people were gunned down in two mosques by the Australian right-wing extremist in Christchurch, Bosnia’s ambassador went on local television to express concern about the song heard in the suspected killer’s video that went on to show him murder victim after victim. It was a “Serbian nationalist song in which the name of Radovan Karadzic is mentioned and called on to lead Serbs”, he said, referring the convicted war criminal who led Bosnia’s Serbs during the 1992-95 war.Karadzic will go before a UN court this week to hear the final verdict on his 40-year sentence for the genocide of Muslims in Srebrenica and other atrocities during the inter-ethnic conflict in Bosnia that left 100,000 dead.According to the Bosnian diplomat, the song’s lyrics also say “Turks must be killed”, a term hardline Serb nationalists still routinely use to refer to Bosnian Muslims.Though linked the 1990s war, the song played by the 28-year-old suspect Brenton Tarrant appears to have more recently been revived as an internet meme in the extreme-right circles he circulated in online. But Tarrant also connected his savage act to figures deep into Balkan history, alongside a roster of other right-wing extremists from across the globe he paid homage to in his hate-filled manifesto.- Ottoman obsession -Among the historical military figures whose names were scrawled on Tarrant’s weapons were several Serb nationalist icons. They were men who fought in famous battles against the the Ottoman Empire’s armies, such as Milos Obilic, a knight in Serb folklore, and Stefan Lazar, a 14th-century Serbian prince. The names of two other 19th century Balkan military leaders against the Ottomans, including Montenegrin general Marko Miljenov, were also written on the guns.During the Ottoman empire the Balkans was a site of frequent contact and conflict between the Muslim and Christian worlds. That history remains a key reference point for Serb ultra-nationalists today.According to local authorities, Tarrant travelled to the region himself in 2016 and early 2017, passing through Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia, and then Bulgaria in November 2018. He also visited Turkey.- ‘Inspired by Serb nationalism’ -In Sarajevo, the Islamic Community of Bosnia said it was alarmed that the “assassin started his bloody escapade to the sound of a song glorifying war crimes in Bosnia”.He “was clearly inspired by this same extremist ideology and hatred” of the 1990s, the group added. The shooter’s Balkan references also aroused bad memories in Kosovo, a mostly Muslim and ethnic-Albanian former Serbian province that broke away in a 1998-99 guerilla war. Some 13,000, mostly Albanians, were killed in the conflict.Writing on Twitter, Kosovo’s former foreign minister Petrit Selimi said the Australian gunman was “inspired by a particular brand of white supremacist nationalism rooted in #Serbia”.He added: “Wars and genocide perpetrated by Serbian ideologues, in Kosovo and Bosnia, seem to have become a point of inspiration for far right across the globe.”- ‘Anti-Serb hysteria’ -Officials in Serbia and Bosnia, whose Serb community is semi-autonomous, have been quick to denounce the finger-pointing.Bosnia’s ethnic Serb Foreign Minister Igor Crnadak condemned the “anti-Serb hysteria” he felt seized the region after the Christchurch massacres.”It is dangerous and irresponsible to establish a link between the crazy actions of a disturbed and sick person and an entire people,” he said in a statement. The country’s Serb co-president Milorad Dodik, who shares the post with a Croat and Muslim counterparts, also criticised the “vile campaign” against his community.Meanwhile in Belgrade, foreign minister Ivica Dacic insisted “Serbia had nothing to do with” the massacre. And the ultra-nationalist Serbian politician Vojislav Seselj, who was convicted of crimes against humanity but still serves in parliament, appeared to see himself as the victim of the story.”The demonisation of the Serbs will continue until our country has surrendered,” he told the local channel Happy TV.
