Brathwaite shines as Delhi down Narine’s KKR

first_imgNEW DELHI, India (CMC): Twenty20 World Cup hero Carlos Brathwaite once again put his all-round qualities on display with a superb Man-of-the-Match effort as Delhi Daredevils trounced Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 27 runs in the Indian Premier League here yesterday. In his first game in two weeks, Brathwaite belted a whirlwind 34 from a mere 11 deliveries as Delhi stormed to 186 for eight off 20 overs after being asked to bat at the Feroz Shah Kotla. The West Indies all-rounder then returned with his medium pace to claim three for 47 as KKR were restricted to 159 all out off 18.3 overs. Six outings First game Off-spinner Sunil Narine, meanwhile, claimed three for 22 from three overs. West Indies Test and one-day captain Jason Holder finished with none for 35 from four overs in his first game of the season. In reply, opener Robin Uthappa stroked 72 from 52 balls, but Suryakumar Yadav, with 21, was the only other batsman to pass 20, as KKR collapsed. Brathwaite proved the architect of their demise, slicing through the middle order with a potent spell. He removed the dangerous Yusuf Pathan for 10 in his first over – the eighth of the innings – before accounting for Yadav in his third over and Rajagopal Satish for 17 in his final over. For Delhi, the victory was their fourth in six outings and it moved them into second spot on eight points while KKR lost their third in seven games and slipped to third, remaining on eight points. Brathwaite was a vital part of Delhi’s revival after the hosts slipped to 32 for three in the fifth over. Karun Nair top-scored with 68 from 50 deliveries, adding 105 for the fourth wicket with Englishman Sam Billings, whose 54 came from 34 balls and included three fours and two sixes. When Nair and Chris Morris (0) fell in the space of three deliveries in the 17th over, Delhi were stuttering on 137 for five, but Brathwaite and Billings put on a frenetic 37 off just 12 balls to give the innings impetus. The first two deliveries that Brathwaite faced disappeared for boundaries and he followed up by smashing left-arm spinner Brad Hogg over square leg for six in the next over, which leaked 18 runs. In the final over, he slammed the first ball from West Indies teammate Andre Russell over midwicket for six, but fell to the next delivery, caught at short fine leg off a slower ball. Seamer Russell conceded only four runs from the remaining four deliveries to finish with the excellent figures of three for 26 from his four overs.last_img read more

Paes-Bhupathi pair clinches Miami title, become World No.1

first_imgAdding to the joy of India’s cricket World Cup triumph, veteran tennis players Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi won their second title of the season by clinching the Sony Ericsson Open here to become number one in the ATP World Tour Doubles Team Rankings.Third seeded Bhupathi and Paes rallied to beat second seeded Belarusian-Canadian pair of Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor 6-7(5) 6-2 10-5.Paes had, in fact won the title even last year with Lukas Dlouhy but for Bhupathi it was his first career title at Crandon Park.”The key (to us winning) was just fighting as a team. Like Leander said, we didn’t play our best match of the week. All four of us were tentative in the beginning,” Bhupathi told ‘sonyericssonopen.com’.The Indian Express duo were up 6-5 in the first set but let it slip by conceding a break and never had a lead in the tie-break.”We had a chance to win that set but we didn’t take it — threw away the breaker pretty much,” Bhupathi said.Bhupathi and Paes found their rhythm in the second set and were also helped by a double fault by Nestor in the fourth game. That enabled the Indians to take a 3-1 lead and they never looked back after that.”My level dropped after the first set. We didn’t get enough balls in play and they served better as the match went on. Max played well, so I feel bad about that. But we played against a tough team today,” Nestor admitted.advertisementThe win takes the Indians ahead of World number one Bob and Mike Bryan for first place in the ATP Doubles Team Rankings and in the battle to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. It is Paes and Bhupathi’s second team title of the year, following the Chennai Open at the start of the season.”It’s still early for us. The season is broken down into four segments — this is just the first of them. If we’re still No. 1 after the US Open, then we’ll start getting excited,” said Bhupathi.Paes finished runner-up to Nestor and Zimonjic with Lukas Dlouhy last year at the French Open, after he and the Czech won it in 2009.”We love playing on the dirt. We got a month off now to get ourselves physically fit and get ready for a lot of long matches on the clay,” Paes said.”The clay definitely helps us because we train so hard for it over the years but at the same time there are a lot of singles guys who play well on the dirt too. At the French Open, I think it’s one of the hardest slams to win, but if we’re physically right, I think it will be good,” he added.- With PTI inputslast_img read more

Python governance vote results are here The steering council model is the

first_imgThe election to select the governance model for Python following the stepping down of Guido van Rossum as the BDFL earlier this year has ended and PEP 8016 was selected as the winner. PEP 8016 is the steering council model that has a focus on providing a minimal and solid foundation for governance decisions. The vote has chosen a governance PEP that will be implemented on the Python project. The winner: PEP 8016 the steering council model Authored by Nathaniel J. Smith, and Donald Stufft, this proposal involves a model for Python governance based on a steering council. The council has vast authority, which they intend to use as rarely as possible, instead, they plan to use this power to establish standard processes. The steering council committee consists of five people. A general philosophy is followed—it’s better to split up large changes into a series of small changes to be reviewed independently. As opposed to trying to do everything in one PEP, the focus is on providing a minimal and solid foundation for future governance decisions. This PEP was accepted on December 17, 2018. Goals of the steering council model The main goals of this proposal are: Sticking to the basics aka ‘be boring’. The authors don’t think Python is a good place to experiment with new and untested governance models. Hence, this proposal sticks to mature, well-known, processes that have been tested previously. A high-level approach where the council does not involve much very common in large successful open source projects. The low-level details are directly derived from Django’s governance. Being simple enough for minimum viable governance. The proposal attempts to slim things down to the minimum required, just enough to make it workable. The trimming includes the council, the core team, and the process for changing documentation. A goal is to ‘be comprehensive’. The things that need to be defined are covered well for future use. Having a clear set of rules will also help minimize confusion. To ‘be flexible and light-weight’. The authors are aware that to find the best processes for working together, it will take time and experimentation. Hence, they keep the document as minimal as possible, for maximal flexibility to adjust things later. The need for heavy-weight processes like whole-project votes is also minimized. The council will work towards maintaining the quality of and stability of the Python language and the CPython interpreter. Make contribution process easy, maintain relations with the core team, establish a decision-making process for PEPs, and so on. They have powers to make decisions on PEPs, enforce project code of conduct, etc. To know more about the election to the committee visit the Python website. Read next NumPy drops Python 2 support.
